iPadOS 16 official: experience more and more laptops for the Apple tablet

iPadOS 16 is official at the WWDC underway in Cupertino. It is not limited only to the new features seen on iOS 16, but rather extends the functions to tools for collaboration (Collaboration) and much more. In short, the tablet becomes mature and leads to an experience of use ever closer to that offered by a laptop.

And just from Collaboration Apple part in the description of the new operating system: we will find the function not only on iPad, but also on iOS and macOS, so as to make the tool perfectly compatible on all platforms of the Apple ecosystem. Another big news of which today we can only have a small taste is Freeformbrand new brainstorming app that we will also find on iPhone and Mac. Finally, Stage Manager, “a new way to multitask with multiple overlapping windows“. Other new features include Mail, Safari with Tab Groups, Weather, Live Text, Reference Mode and Display Zoom.

THE MAIN NEWS

MESSAGES

The new feature in Messages lets you collaborate and manage shared content via File, Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Notes, Reminders, and Safari (and even third-party apps). Just receive or send an invitation, and that’s it: you can start collaborating via Messages by adding content and comments. All changes occur in real time and are indicated at the top of the thread.

With Messages you can now also:

  • edit a sent message
  • recover a deleted message
  • mark conversations as unread
  • start a SharePlay session

FREEFORM

It is also dedicated to collaboration, it allows users to see, share and collaborate on a white space, a sort of palette to be filled with comments, notes and so on. Obviously there is no lack of support for Apple Pencil. Everything happens simultaneously, and everyone is able to know who added what. Freeform will arrive with iPadOS 16.

MAIL

New tools are coming to Mail, such as the ability to cancel the sending of a message or schedule the email. Users will be notified if they forget to include any part of the message (a contact or attachment, for example), while more accurate results are provided with the new search tool.

PHOTO LIBRARY SHARED ON ICLOUD

Photos can now be shared with up to six family members. You can share old photos or define from which date to activate the function. Apple explains that photos can be added manually or through sharing tools. Of course, every time a user adds or removes a photo, the update will take place simultaneously for all the other members of the group.

SAFARI

The browser becomes more collaborative and customizable, as well as secure. Shared Tab Groups arrive to collaborate on some tabs with friends and see updates instantly. These groups also allow you to start a conversation on Safari and can be customized with an image, bookmarks and more.

The also arrive passkey, the access keys, a secure method for sign-in that actually replaces passwords on the web and in apps. They are digital keys that remain in the device, therefore they are not shared with any external server. In addition, users can access sites or apps on Apple or non-Apple devices simply by using their passkey by scanning the QR code with iPad and using Face ID or Touch ID.

WEATHER FORECAST

Weather is updated and finally takes advantage of the size of the iPad display with animations and information, as well as with maps and specific data on air quality and temperature.

LIVE TEXT, VISUAL LOOK UP

With Live Text, texts and images are recognized: now the function is also extended to videos. Visual Look Up allows instead of withdraw a subject from a photo or isolate it by eliminating the background.
